It is a low carbon quenched and tempered alloy steel that is a low-cost, high performing material for structural use and high wear machine applications. ASTM A514 plate steel has a min-yield strength of 100 ksi/690 MPa. It’s most commonly used as a structural steel in building construction, for cranes, or other large machines supporting high loads.
A514 is used where a weldable, machinable, very high strength steel is required to save weight or meet ultimate strength requirements.The ASTM A514 specification is the Standard Specification for High-Yield-Strength, Quenched and Tempered Alloy Steel Plate, Suitable for Welding used in applications where Yield Strengths of ≥ 100 ksi are required for plates up to 2-1/2" thick, inclusive. Plates > 2-1/2" and ≤ 6" in thickness have a minimum Yield Strength requirement of 90 ksi. Each grade has different chemistry requirements.
